The causes and effects of early school leaving is well documented in all communities. Within the Traveller community early school leaving has been a considerable concern with the known lack of opportunities well known.
The Alternative Education Program opened on the 6th of October 2003. The project was specially designed for young Travellers, aged between 14 – 17, who have left main stream education for various reasons. The program aims to enable young Travellers to gain a range of accredited qualifications to encrease their self esteem, encourage active citizenship and seek to remove the barriers leading to social inclusion.
The project has mainly attracted young women however we are currently developing programmes to encourage young men to participate in training and education.
This year we have a number of young people taking their GCSE’s and we will also be offering participants a 6 week work placement, with either stautory of community organisations.
