In September 2004 we received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop an Arts project in partnership with St Mary's Primary School.
The project was called Gayla L'esko and was developed to engage Traveller children in a fun journey of discovery and celebration of there culture and history thorugh language, story telling, song and visual arts.
The children produced a cd and book entitled 'fishing for food and mushrooms' which they launched in St.Mary's primary school on the 21 October 2005.
Children from the 'Windy Gap' have entered photograph's into Pavee Point's 'A Traveller's Ireland' photographic competition. The photographs portray what life is like for a Traveller in 2005.
We are confident that within the next 2 years Gayla Expression Arts will receive further recognition as the new creative voice of the Traveller Community and it will help to highlight the valuable cultural and creative contribution the Traveller Community can make to Northern Ireland. |
